Midland, Michigan, October 2013 – Greater Michigan Construction Academy (GMCA) is taking skilled trades training to Saginaw’s First Ward Community Services.  The 6-8 week course begins on October 15, 2013 and meets Tuesday – Thursday from 4-7 pm. Students will be trained in the NCCER Core Curriculum learning basic knowledge in construction and safety. The Core class is a pre-requisite for any student seeking certification in one of the 11 trades offered at GMCA.

Core Curriculum topics include:
• Basic Safety
• Construction Math
• Introduction to Hand Tools, Power Tools and Construction Drawings
• Basic Rigging
• Communication and Employability Skills
• Introduction to Materials Handling
• OSHA 10-Hour Training

The class will be taught by Sam Pruitt. Pruitt currently works in the Carrollton school district and has certifications in building and construction. “We are excited to have the ability to bring our training to the areas where it is needed most. The collaboration with First Ward has been incredible and we look forward to opening up doors of opportunity for these young folks.” says Jimmy Greene, President & CEO, Associated Builders and Contractors Greater Michigan Chapter. 

Participants will also be visiting area construction firms and site for a first-hand look at the construction industry in action as well as bringing in speakers from the top Contractor companies in the Region. 16 students are currently enrolled and interest in a second session has already been expressed.
